Jess Rose McDowell,
founder of fitness brand KINETIC SWEAT

Describe your business in one sentence.

KINETIC SWEAT is a full-service fitness business professionally tailored with every woman in mind, offering virtual and in-person training, instruction and tools that are practical, attainable and affordable

What inspired you to start your own company?

I was tired of being undervalued, underpaid and mistreated, working jobs that I knew deep down was not my passion or purpose. But every past job gave me the professional and personal experiences to enable me to start my own successful business. Fitness, mental health and owning my own business have been a life goal for as long as I can remember. It only takes one person to change the lives of others, and I wanted that person to be me.

Fitness is not just a passion but a lifestyle. It has given me a physically and mentally sound life, saved me from my darkest seasons, given me a reason to connect with people all over, as well as been a constant in my life, never disappointing me – something I’ve struggled with: abandonment. Every day I’d pray and continue to pray about starting my own fitness – body and mind – business. I’d write down business plans, goals, branding – everything you could imagine. When the time was right, it all fell into place, without forcing anything. My goal is to instil the KINETIC SWEAT mission in the lives of women near or far: “Incline a balance in body and mind, while sprouting electrifying confidence”.
What's the greatest lesson you've learned about being in business?

Gosh! Prioritising and staying organised is key. Listen to those around you; never think you're done learning; practice what you preach; set boundaries; treat people with respect; don't let anyone walk over you; it is okay to ask questions; stay up to date with industry trends; build solid, trusting relationships; have empathy; don't ever apologise for being ambitious; and let any set-backs be a lesson, not failure.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Don't be afraid to mess up, and don't expect success overnight. Get so damn lost and find yourself over and over again. Believe in yourself; forget about what other people think; and trust your journey. If you don't do it, someone else will!

How do you stay motivated after a setback?

I put on motivational music and go for a long run. I picture myself in past jobs and how miserable I was, wasting my potential away or how unhappy I'd be if I settled for less. Then I remind myself of the strong, capable, healthy and worthy woman I've confidently grown into, as well as each milestone I've achieved since starting my own business. I take time to be still in my faith, with prayer, or reach out to those who love and support me for encouraging words.

Where do you see your company in five years' time?

A nationally known business that continues to offer virtual and in-person training but on a much larger scale, where I am travelling to all different locations to train with women and offer my tools. KINETIC SWEAT is not just a small business but a branded lifestyle for women to feel strong, confident and powerful.

I’d love to host workshops all over the country where I can speak to groups of women and be a leader in the fitness, health and mental health industries. And also partner with activewear brands, fitness brands, mental health associations and health companies, as a spokesperson and leader. I’d also like to have my own branded fitness equipment.
