Katie Henry,
director of Art in Offices.

Describe your business in one sentence.

We enable companies to have access to original art at affordable prices, to enrich workspaces, inspire staff, empower brands and bring staff happiness and wellness in their workplace

What inspired you to start your own company?

I temped and had full-time jobs in offices after art school, and I just found them the most soulless places to work in. I could feel my energy being sapped and my creativity dry up. I didn’t want other people to feel like that so I set up a company that provides a service that makes sure people feel motivated, happy and inspired in their workplace. Plus, research shows that offices with art see an increase of 35% in productivity and 42% in wellness – those are staggering statistics.

What's the greatest lesson you've learned about being in business?

Networking is key to success as an entrepreneur. You very quickly get referrals through your network if people know you, trust you, like you and value your input to their project. So it’s very valuable to network and ask for referrals through networks.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

That no one has the skills to do everything themselves. In the beginning, hire freelancers online to help you do things you can’t. As you grow, find regular freelancers you can throw tasks to or hire people who have a broad skill set, until you can afford to hire people with a specific skill set.

How do you stay motivated after a setback?

That is very hard, and I’ve been in situations where I mistakenly did things or clients took advantage of my naivety and it has cost me financially. But I think it’s important to take a minute to focus on the value you add – to the business and to someone else’s business. Then you can negotiate or renegotiate your position, knowing that you genuinely do add value as a person, and as a business.

Where do you see your company in five years' time?

In five years time, we’ll have a larger team and a more international reach, but our mission to provide companies with access to art on their office walls will still be the same – but that’s at the core of what we do and why we exist as a company.
